Why a Pool Fence Is Just As Important in the Swimming Off Season

Nov 1, 2014 | Residential Fencing

Having a pool fence around your in-ground pool makes a lot of sense.

– It keeps unwanted pests out, an especially true fact for those who live in rural settings.

– It provides a safety barrier for small children to keep accidents from happening.

– It stop pets from making your pool a relaxing oasis when you aren’t looking.

This may be even more true in your pool’s swimming off season. Because when is it more important to fence something off than when it’s not in use? So if you just had an in-ground pool installed this year, or you have been meaning to erect a pool fence, there’s no better time than fall to do so.

Further, depending on the VA municipality you live in, it may even be the law to have a pool fence. The ordinance is very specific, and reads:

“Swimming pool” includes any outdoor man-made structure constructed from material other than natural earth or soil designed or used to hold water for the purpose of providing a swimming or bathing place for any person or any such structure for the purpose of impounding water therein to a depth of more than two feet.

Not having a fence around your pool in any locality that has ordained such laws may result in a fine or even jail time.

Further, if you haven’t done so in a while, check with your local courthouse to see if the law may have been adopted post-installation. Because according to the ordinance, you will not be able to cite a “grandfather clause” if such a law was adopted after your pool was dug. So it’s better to be safe than sorry.
