Whether it’s to keep the pets inside, divide a property line, or simply for privacy, fencing is something many homeowners and business owners value highly on their properties. This serves as a barrier for whatever you don’t want in or out, and allows for the added privacy when necessary. Chances are, if you are in the market for fencing it’s difficult to know which type is best for you.

Maybe you’ve decided on the material, or possibly you are fortunate enough to already have a fence located on your property. Regardless of the case, over time with the regular wear and tear of climate conditions and changes your fence is bound to need fixed at some point during its lifetime. Fence repair is something that you need to be educated about and plan for when owning a fence. What type of fence you have will determine the steps to repairing it to its original glory.

Here are the most common fencing materials and the possible repair scenarios for each:

  • Wooden Fences: Climate conditions such as heavy sun and driving rain, wind and snow, and the potential rot can make it very possible for wooden fences to need repairs. When choosing wooden materials, choose the most rot-resistant lumber you can find. Then, take the necessary precautions to protect it against the elements. Rot can be a wooden fence’s very worst foe. Remember that the part of the fence you can’t see, the part underground, may be the only part that needs repaired. Unfortunately, this typically means you will need to replace the entire post. Be aware that just because you can’t see a wooden fence’s faults doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
  • Chain Link Fences: Since chain link fences are made of metal, they are more prone to rust than any other fence. For this reason alone, at times certain parts need to be repaired or replaced. Because it is composed of wires, typically certain parts of the fence can be removed and replaced by loosening the meshing and pulling out the damaged area.
  • Vinyl Fences: Vinyl fencing is known for its durability; however, just because it is tough does not mean it isn’t subject to repair. If your vinyl fence has a small hairline crack it can typically be repaired with a repair kit. If part of the fencing is coming unattached or subject to greater harm, you will need to contact a fencing professional for repairing options.
  • Screened Porches: Screen porches are especially vulnerable to repair needs due to the use they are subjected to and the delicacy of screen. In some parts of the United States, screened porches can be used year round. With heavy use, you may find yourself in need of a professional for repairing needs. This may entail simply fixing a rip or tear in the screen, or replacing an entire section entirely.
